Human nature at it's best

Don Wessels, has been disabled and blind for 29 years. He is happily married and blessed with three lovely boys. Some of his favourite hobbies include fishing. His fishing trips has stretched as far as Henties Bay in Namibia, Kariba in Zimbabwe, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Mozambique, Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, and of course all over the Cape. Don and his wife climbed the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, a year after their wedding. Don has achieved many amazing things since his accident and he is continuously living life to the fullest.

Don Wessels should be an inspiration to the world. The courage and strength, both physically and mentally, it took to become the man he is, must have been a hard but fruitfull journey.

The image I took of Don speaks about his life trapped between two worlds: his own world and that of his family. Don spends each day with his two year old son whom he is embracing in his arms. Don lives in a world where his senses are the most important factor of his life. He uses his heightened senses in order to complete daily tasks, whilst at the same time attending to his fatherly and husband duties. His reality is completely different from everyone elses but yet he still mastered it better than most of us ever could.

My aim with these photographs was not to make people empathize with Don but rather to admire and be inspired by his journey. Cause at the end of the day, life is what you make of it.
